A great recommendation for children and adults
I was so excited when I found out that there was a sequel to The Mysterious benedict Society! I read it in less than a week.I hoped this one would be as good as the other and it certainly is! This book is full of more riddles and puzzles and is the return of your favorite characters.
In this book Mr. Benedict is planning a surprise for the society. When the children get to his house, Rhonda tells them that Mr. Benedict was kidnapped by his evil twin brother, Ledroptha Curtain. Curtain won’t let Mr. Benedict go until he tells them the name of a certain, special plant and where it is located.
The Mysterious Benedict Society finds out that Mr. Benedict’s surprise is a trip and they were to get there by following his riddles. The children figure that Mr. Benedict would be near where the riddles were to lead them… so the kids set off on their own!
After following a lot of riddles the children find the island Mr. Benedict is on. They encounter Martia Crowe (remember her?) and people a ton scarier,too.
They know where Benedict is but how in the world could children, even as clever as these children, defeat Curtain and his Ten Men?
This book is great for anyone! I hope Trenton Lee Stewart creates a next book!!!

Reading is Book is not a Perilous Decision!
For lovers of the first Mysterious Benedict Society novel, here comes another installment of mystery, puzzles and teamwork for your enjoyment.

I love the way Trenton Lee Stewart mentions things that others would leave out, like the varying strengths of children. Reynie is so good at interpreting other’s most secret emotions, all by using his common sense and by watching facial expressions, and I’ve never read about that in a book before. In pointing out subtle strengths of the children, Trenton Lee Stewart makes sure Reynie, Sticky, Kate and Constance are all close to our hearts. Their ability to work together (and sometimes even the way they bicker) is so fun to read about and so realistic. In this book, The Mysterious Benedict Society is about to have their one year reunion, and a party to celebrate at Mr. Benedict’s house. But, upon their arrival, they discover that a sort of ransom note (sent by homing pigeon) has foiled their plans. Mr. Benedict and Number Two, his right hand woman, have been kidnapped! The children, always thoughtful and responsible, waver on whether they should disobey their loved ones to go on this “perilous journey,” but alas, they must save their namesake, and go. On this journey, they encounter many puzzles, clues, and mysteries just as intriguing and fun as the first book. I’m so glad to have read another installment of the Mysterious Benedict Society, and I hope they keep coming!

The Mysterious Benedict Society, a group of four children created to thwart the plans of the evil genius Ledroptha Curtain, is fresh off their great victory. The “brainswept” are slowly having their memories returned and everything seems like it should be getting back to normal. It should be the perfect happy ending, yet happy endings are rarely so simple…

All is not well for the Mysterious Benedict Society. Reynie, still shaken by the previous adventures, finds himself having nightmares of being surrounded by snakes. A conversation with Mr. Benedict did little to ease his growing fears that wickedness is something to be generally expected of people. Kate has been living largely on her own wits for the past six months (Milligan largely off doing secret agent work) and Sticky has had trouble convincing his parents that he should be allowed to go to college. As for three-year-old Constance, she continues to struggle with being a young child genius, while the government refuses to even properly acknowledge her existence so she can be adopted by Mr. Benedict.

The group comes together again with the promise of experiencing a great surprise created by Mr. Benedict, but then learns something horrifying. Both Benedict and Number Two have captured by Curtain and his minions — now going by the name “the Ten Man” — for the ten different ways they have of torturing people. The only solution may be to follow through with Mr. Benedict’s surprise — an adventure he planned for them that may now be their only way to save him. So, once again, danger and thrills are promised, but also a great read and satisyfing adventure.

The book jacket states that the author, Trenton Lee Stewart, is a graduate of the Iowa Writer’s Workshop. If his works are any indication, then they may just have something special there. The jacket also offers a review comparing the style to that of Lemony Snicket — but I never could quite bring myself to fully enjoy Snicket’s mode of writing. This book, however, has been the most anticipated for me since “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” and I’m delighted to say that it satisfies. Pick up a copy for yourself and find out what adventures are in store for this intrepid quartet.

Excellent Read!
I really loved this book! Got it yesterday and read 3/4 of it soon as I got it…quitting only because it was 3 a.m… and my eyes were sleepy! Lot of it has been reported on Henleys and Freys Egos and all…but this was even more of an insight into….how greedy they really seemed to be. I could have read more…wish he’d gone into even more detail…but of course “THE GODS” sued to keep a lot out of it! hard to believe they could become one of the greatest band ever.amonst all the acrimony, etc.!Really an enjoyable read!

He was the “New Kid in Town”-Memoir provides fascinating insight into Eagles
Don Felder rose from near poverty to become guitarist in one of the most popular bands in the 70’s. His new book HEAVEN AND HELL chronicles how he became a guitarist, met Fleetwood Mac’s Peter Green, Duane Allman and other important guitarists, developed his skills and ultimately became one of the guitarist/songwriters in the Eagles.

Felder was first introduced to Henley & Frey by his future and former Eagles bandmate Bernie Leadon who was a friend. Interestingly, Felder also played at one time in a band with Stephen Stills although he never tried to use that connection when he got his first big break backing David Blue and, later, Crosby & Nash.

Felder’s book is surprisingly even handed given the recent bad blood between Don Henley & Glenn Frey and Felder over his firing from the band. Felder ultimately had to take his former bandmates to court since he was a part owner of Eagles, Ltd. the company the band set up to pay out their royalities and handle merchandising.

While there’s no doubt that “The Gods” (as Felder refers to them when, later in the band’s career, they suddenly became perfect and untouchable in their own eyes)are talented, they gave Felder a raw deal considering how much he did contribute to the band. Nevertheless, Felder manages to be fair balanced and brings up both the good and bad times. Ultimately, he feels that his sacking from the band was a benefit because, as his estranged wife pointed out, he was locked in an abusive relationship at the end of the band’s rein.

Felder provides details about the creation of many of the band’s classics, how the band really was a “one for all and all for one” at first when he joined but that the fighting and bickering had already begun as well.

He also chronicles how the Eagles managed to bruise and damage his friendships with former bandmates Joe Walsh and Tim Schmit.

Kudos to the book’s co-author as well for helping Felder create a breezy memoir about his life in the fast lane. The book does have some flaws for example when referring to “On the Border” the book states that Henley & Frey wrote or co-wrote 9 of the 14 songs on the album (there were only 10 songs on the album and Henley co-wrote 5 while Frey co-wrote 4).

I suspect that during the galleys this got overlooked but there are bits and pieces that have minor inconsistencies. The authors also thank Marc Elliot for his book TO THE LIMIT which was written with participation of Don Henley to clear up some issues as well. Elliot’s book, along with this one, provide a good clear idea about the band’s rise and fall from the heights of rock stardom.

It’s a pity that Felder was sidelined as he is a talented guitarist and songwrite but this book does address some of the questions that lingered around his dismissal.

This truly is Felder’s inside perspective on being in one of the most popular bands of its time. I would have liked a complete discography on Felder’s career and, perhaps, to have also heard a bit more about his post-Eagles life but those are minor issues in the context of the thing.

Life In - And Out Of - The Fast Lane
First off, Felder has written (with help, admittedly) a very enjoyable look into the life and times of one of America’s last great rock bands. Days when musicians depended on talent and not computer samples to create songs, and when being able to carry a tune with your voice wasn’t such a liability as it is nowadays.

Secondly, it is an eye opening and fascinating look into what happens to insecure people with huge egos once they come into money, and lots of it. By this I’m speaking about “The Gods,” Don Henley and Glenn Frey. At one point late in the book, the band is on tour in (memory fails me, but I think) China, and Glenn Frey instructs a lackey to overnight him a couple of cartons of his favorite cigarette. The lackey is summarily fired - because he shipped Frey SOFT PACKS instead of FLIP TOP BOXES. My jaw literally dropped when I read that. If that’s what happens to you when you get rich and famous, I’m glad I am neither.

Having been (somewhat) in Felder’s shoes, where people I trusted and thought of as friends suddenly threw me under the bus and had convenient amnesia as to my contributions to their success, I can relate to his story. Frey and Henley welcomed Felder into the band whole-heartedly, calling him Duane Allman incarnate, (which he is), and then set themselves up as the Supreme Dictators Of The Eagles, wrapping themselves in their own cloaks of superiority and fired Felder only when he asked to see the books of where the money was going.

I also cannot believe that Irving Azoff is actually still in business, the way he “managed” both Felder and “The Gods,” yet was nothing more than a highly paid lapdog of Frey and Henley, screwing everyone else around him.

I’m afraid I’ve digressed, but it was a very intriguing book, one that I found hard to put down. If you’re at all a fan of the band’s music, and especially if you’ve read “To The Limit” by Marc Eliot, you’ll find it incredibly enjoyable.

Ooh la la! Fancy Nancy teaches vocabulary
Instead of a story, this charming Fancy Nancy book is an A-to-Z list of expressive words sure to expand your child’s vocabulary. Don’t be surprised if you hear your little girl tell you she yearns for a gorgeous — not understated — wardrobe, complete with accessories such as a lavender boa, a glamorous tiara and a monogrammed parasol. That one sentence includes 11 of the fancy words in this hardback.
Illustrations are always the heart of a Fancy Nancy book, and this one’s no exception. Expressive pen and ink over brilliant watercolor, they not only bring Nancy’s imaginative world to life, but are also loaded with teeny little details. You, or your child, can look at each page for a long time.
Nancy would approve of the cover. It’s very fancy, with glossy glittery sparkles on the artwork and the words. When you take off the paper sleeve, the cover has the same artwork but without the sparkles.

Cute Book!
This book is really cute, as are all of the Fancy Nancy books. There is one word for each letter of the alphabet - one letter (word) per page - each word is beautifully illustrated. The book is smaller than the regular Fancy Nancy books, it’s a little smaller than a sheet of notebook paper.
The words are the usual “fancy” words that Nancy uses. As for learning, I would recommend this for younger (3yr - 6yr) children. For enjoyment -the illustrations are my favorite - this book is great for all ages =)

We had the opportunity to chat with Sophie Uliano over e-mail about Gorgeously Green, her suggestions for saving the Earth, and the very real possibility of becoming a hippie. Here’s what Sophie had to say about the economics of eco-consciousness, the allure of non-toxic nail polish, and of course, whether it’s truly easy being green.

Amazon.com: I’ve heard a common complaint that energy-saving light bulbs, organic food and clothing, and other “green” products are not as economical as traditional products. Is that true? Any tips for readers who want to be eco-conscious and budget-conscious too?

Sophie Uliano: I think that going green has a double meaning in that it also is about saving money. There is no way that I would or could go green if it meant that I was going to have to pay much more. If you make the cleaning spray that I suggest in my book, you will save a bunch on cleaning supplies because it’s an all-purpose cleaner that I use on almost everything (a great germ-buster too). You will pay a little more upfront for energy-saving light bulbs, but as they last 15 times longer, you will save money in the long run. Food is the only thing that you may have to pay a bit more for, however, I think that your health is an important investment, so I choose to save on boring cleaning supplies and treat my family to food that not only tastes more delicious, but will keep them healthy and vibrant. Remember that if you follow all the energy-saving tips in the book, you are going to save a wad of cash too–so it’s a win/win.

Amazon.com: I think many people are interested in making more sustainable choices, but when it comes to the heavy lifting it can be hard to break old habits. We tend to think, “Someone else will ride their bike to work today–I’ll drive like I always do.” What advice do you have that can help people “walk the talk”?

Uliano: I agree that it is hard to break old habits. My suggestion is to break one habit at a time. Choose the one thing that bothers you most. For me it is using paper towels when I know that I can easily use a rag instead. Make a decision about the change you want to make and tell your friends and family that you have decided to do this one thing and that you want their support. It could be that you are going to cook one organic meal from scratch once a week, or that you are going to air-dry your clothes this summer or simply that you will wash out a barely used zip-lock bag, instead of throwing it away–easy!

Amazon.com: Furthermore, I’ve heard many people worry that eco-consciousness is the first step toward becoming a granola hippie, to use one of your own phrases from the book. Do you have to be a hippie to go green?

Uliano: You so don’t have to become the tree hugger/hippie to live a green way of life. I feel passionately that you can still have the glitz, the glam and the gleaming house because now there are so many eco-friendly companies that offer you safe and healthy choices: nail polishes, organic clothes that are fabulous to name a few.

Amazon.com: Not everyone lives in an area where green options are available and accessible. Can you suggest a few ways that readers can live a greener lifestyle even if they don’t have easy access to car-sharing companies, wet dry-cleaners, and other alternatives you mention in your book?

Uliano: If you don’t have easy access to some of the green options in my book, it really doesn’t matter. No matter where you live, you can make a start. I recently visited my in-laws in Georgia, who have fewer options than we do here in Los Angeles; however, they have embarked on making their own cleaners, composting, growing veggies etc. There’s advantages to living in a metropolitan city in that you can buy all the great eco-stuff, but if you live in a more rural setting, it’s fantastic too because you may have a yard in which you can grow tomatoes or air-dry your laundry. I’d pick the latter if given the choice!

Amazon.com: Your book is mainly directed toward female readers–what tips do you have for men who are interested in making sustainable lifestyle changes?

Uliano: I wrote my book for women because I realized that as a mom, wife and working girl I could show like-minded women how easy it is to become green, however, men can totally benefit from my book too! My husband doesn’t have a huge interest in non-toxic nail polish, but he’s fascinated with everything solar and has started biking everywhere. We work together as a team, inspiring each other with our daily green discoveries–it’s fun!

Gorgeously Greenwashed?
I tried really hard to love this book. While I truly admire Sophie Uliano’s enthusiasm and witty tone, there are few “buts” that were quite annoying. What’s worse, these nasty “buts” made me question whether the advice given in the book is authentic, useful, and genuine.
1. Do yourself a favour and skip the beauty section of the book. Ms Uliano had to spend more time researching before writing a segment on green beauty. Many of “organic” and “green” products she recommends are loaded with potentially toxic substances such as synthetic preservatives and fragrances. Consistency is key. Poorly researched tips in one section undermine author’s credibility in other areas, and in general undermine reader’s trust in the whole green living thing.
2. While the book is very informative and packed with easy tips, most chapters look like a link exchange section of a website. Too many links to websites - and some aren’t that relevant. What’s more irritating, the author blatantly promotes her own website on every page. It may be fun once or twice, but not in every chapter.Sometimes it feels like the author didn’t really care about adding more information to the book - why bother if you can easily upload all the articles online?
Speaking of online: most of the tips can be easily found online FOR FREE.
3. Too many typos. It’s “Herbatint”, not “Hebatint”, mind you. And this hair dye is so chemically loaded, you shouldn’t really mention it in a green living guide. When I found ten typos, I stopped counting, and I wasn’t even in the middle of the book. I know, it’s not the author’s fault, it’s the publisher’s lack of effort, but still. Such things don’t support the idea of importance of green living.
In general, the book is an easy uplifting read that may convert few babyboomers into “green girls”.

this book is a must for all moms. it has opened my eyes to the toxins and dangers that are in everyday products. this book gives simple and practical ways to introduce new and healthy items and rid yourself of the bad. it’s a new favorite for me.

Turns out, it is easy being green!
I saw her on Oprah and thought I’d buy the book but wasn’t all that excited about it. Wow, it’s wonderful. It has a break down of all the info you need to make educated dicussions. Also, it isn’t full of old environmental attitudes of all or nothing. Sofie says again and again doing one thing makes a difference. She also tells you where to find the green alternatives that work!!! I highly recommend this book. I’ve bought books for my mom and sister. Both of whom love the book. I’ve also just purchased more books for my children’s teachers.

YA. Crichton’s newest novel is billed as a “technical thriller” but the technology seems to outweigh the thrills. Casey Singleton is called upon to lead the investigation of the near air disaster of Flight 545. The pilot landed the plane safely but three passengers were killed. All of the evidence is conflicting?the pilot attributed the incident to turbulence but there was none. The flight attendant says the pilot fought the autocontrol but he didn’t. What really happened to this flight? As Casey tries to piece the puzzle together, a national TV network plans an expose of the accident. The program is not focused on the truth but rather on discrediting the airline. Casey’s race against time is further complicated when attempts are made on her life. Airframe is full of technical jargon and explanations of how airplanes fly and why they sometimes don’t. A different M.C.
I enjoyed this book. A bit different than the author’s previous books. Quite a bit of mystery to the story which was very readable. The main character is very human and easy to identify with. The story goes into some interesting technnical aspects of airframe design and the ins and outs of contract grabbing.
Some have criticized this book as being slow but I don’t think so. This book is a good read.

Much slower
This book is much slower than most Crichton early novels. More of a mystery book than action.

Decent, but Lesser Crichton
AIRFRAME is a competent suspense novel, and I applaud Crichton’s attempt to write an intelligent potboiler. But the characterization in this book is quite thin, and the subject matter is simply not as fascinating as Crichton seems to think.
As another reviewer commented, the technology in AIRFRAME outweighs the thrills. Crichton is a remarkably intelligent writer, but he tries too hard to incorporate aviation jargon into this particular book. I know that Crichton does extensive research for this novel, but I felt he made little effort to make most of it understandable to the reader. There were certain chapters where I simply felt my eyes glazing over.
Crichton also uses this novel to rant against certain things he dislikes in society (the media, trial lawyers, unions, US trade policy, the abolition of the fairness doctrine, etc.), which I ultimately found tiresome. The ending of AIRFRAME is also somewhat disappointing, given the huge buildup.
My advice is to go with some of Crichton’s other work, such as THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY, SPHERE, or JURASSIC PARK.

Fascinating and vivid
When a history book describes Plymouth Rock as looking like a “fossilized potato” and Florida’s capitol building as “The Big D…,” you know you’re in for something unusual. Having gone to college in Tallahassee, I can attest to the reasons for the capitol’s nickname — its “towering shaft flanked by gonadlike domes,” as author Tony Horwitz puts it. He writes with equal wit throughout “A Voyage Long and Strange,” a smart, funny book that skewers traditional views of our nation’s past. I couldn’t put it down.
The book explores the lusty, violent period in American history between Columbus and Jamestown. Horwitz embarks on a journey of his own, exploring the modern-day places where our country began. Along the way he uncovers some strange truths — Columbus never saw or set foot on any land that became U.S. soil; Pocahontas was only 10 years old when she met John Smith and they were never romantic; Ponce de Leon was looking not for the Fountain of Youth but rather gold, just like so many others. The overall picture is cruel, hilarious, messy, unfair and always fascinating.
Over a dozen maps and many historical black and white illustrations are scattered through the book.

Long, Strange, and a Ball of Laughs
Who could have guessed that history (and current events) could be so much fun. Horwitz, whose previous triumphs have included books about Civil War reenactments, travels in the Middle East, and a retracing of Captain Cook’s voyages in the South Pacific, turns his gimlet eye on the first European forays into the New World. “Washing up” in Plymouth, Massachusetts one day on a New England road trip, he buys a beer at the Myles Standish Liquor store, beds down at the William Bradford inn, and then mocks (in his mind) the clueless tourists at Plymouth Rock. But as he mulls over his experience, he realizes how little (even as a history major) he knows about the origins of the land that became America. The rest, as they say, is history, and history of a most witty and enlightening kind. Who knew, for instance, that Juan Ponce de Leon came to Florida looking for gold and slaves like everyone else, and not for the Fountain of Youth? or that the man for whom the DeSoto touring car was named was a butcher of unequaled savagery? The first feast in the New World that might appropriately be called Thanksgiving took place in St. Augustine and probably consisted of a stew of salt pork and garbanzo beans. (And there is some contention between Floridians and “the powdered wig” states over who should get credit for the national holiday.) A Voyage Long and Strange is a ball of laughs and a veil of tears–the offhand executions of women and children play out in the same text as deliberations upon whether moose is kosher and whether one should ride the “Trolley of the Doomed” in St. Tourist Trap, Florida. Horwitz goofs some stuff up–he thinks Mormons believe themselves to be descendants of the Nephites–but on the whole this is a fascinating, impossible-to-put-down look at where we came from and what we have become.

Travels in space and time
Some of my favorite books are those in which the authors recreate historical voyages. Thor Heyerdahl’s Kon-Tiki and Ra journeys, Colin Tubrin’s pilgrimage along the Silk Road, Dayton Duncan’s re-tracing the Lewis & Clark path: I love reading that stuff. And now Tony Horwitz has contributed to the genre with his A Voyage Long and Strange, a book in which he “roams the annals of early America” (p. 7). Readers who remember his Confederates in the Attic can well imagine the insight with which Horwitz explores the history of the New World’s discovery and the wry sense of humor he brings to his personal rediscovery of ancient routes.
Horwitz set out to explore all the points in the New World “discovered” and described by early explorers. Focusing on the three categories (that frequently, in reality, overlapped) of discovery, conquest, and settlement, Horwitz narrates the history of, for example, Coronado’s search for the Cities of Gold (pp. 134-164) or the settlement of Roanoke’s “lost colony” (pp. 293-325), and interweaves in the narration accounts of his own travels over Coronado’s route and his exploration of the Carolina peninsula where the lost colony once flourished. The mixture makes for exciting reading, lending a contemporary vitality to the historical descriptions.
I was especially intrigued by Horwitz’s account of the Spanish exploration of the New World (chapters 5-9). It’s as good a short account of the conquest of the southeastern coastal regions, the southwestern deserts, and the plains west of the Mississippi, as any I know. Chapter 9, which deals with de Soto’s rather aimless trek north of what today is Louisiana into Arkansas, Mississippi, and Texas–which Horwitz describes as “wandering blind, deaf, and mute in the middle of the continent” (p. 255)–is particularly interesting.* It really does underscore just how much of a leap into the unknown the early visitors to the New World were making.
All in all, an interesting read with a good bibliography and several helpful maps. Highly recommended.

* While trying to recreate de Soto’s confused ramblings, Horowitz makes his way to Arkansas City, where he’s been told he’ll find de Soto’s coffin. But Horwitz discovers he’s been on a wild goose chase. As a city elder tells him, “Young man, I do believe you’ve been led on. Just like those Spanish, always chasing their gold” (p. 259). In more ways than one, then, Horwitz walked in the early explorers’ shoes.
